  1. Acute tropical viral disease, prevalent in
  2. the Caribbean area, Brazil, and on the west
  3. coast of Africa. Its symptoms are a high
  4. fever and yellowish skin (jaundice, possibly
  5. leading to liver failure); the heart and
  6. kidneys may also be affected. Before the
  7. arrival of Europeans, yellow fever was not a
  8. problem because indigenous people had built
  9. up an immunity. The disease was brought under
  10. control after the discovery that it is
  11. carried by the mosquito Aedes aegypti. The
  12. first effective vaccines were produced by Max
  13. Theiler of South Africa, for which he was
  14. awarded the 1951 Nobel Prize for Medicine.
